Gastronomy
20, Feb 2014
Being a place of fishermen ad mostly centered in the sea, the Algarve is one of the many Portuguese gastronomic paradises dedicated to the lovers of fresh fish and the best seafood quality.
The base of the meals is mostly composed by fish, meat, vegetables and fruit, being the codfish considered the National dish. Because of this, around Christmas, while other countries eat turkey, Portugal eats codfish with boiled potatoes, cabbage and chickpeas, all seasoned with olive oil.
One of Algarve’s unique experiences are the rich and varied gastronomies that mix recipies from both the coastal and the interior regions.
Every morning boats full of fresh fish arrive to the markets. This fish is then carefully prepared at the many fine restaurants. The most popular dishes are the fish soups, octopus rice, whelks’ dish with kidney beans, the fish-stew and the shellfish açorda. In the interior regions, all dishes have a typical rural flavor, like fava beans, cherry chicken and chickpeas stew.
One of the best perfected arts in all Portugal is the desserts and sweets and this finds in the Algarve one of the best places for this art. You will want to try all of them, from “Dom Rodrigos”, the Morgadinhos, or figs filled with almonds and many other goodies made with almonds, honey and fig jam.
Few steps before Booking
20, Feb 2014
Before arriving there are a few steps you should consider when choosing your Algarve accommodation in order to make the right decision. Bear in mind that the Algarve is a very high demanded destination during the high season (May – September) for what I recommend you don’t leave your accommodation booking for the last minute or that will result in you paying much higher prices than you would expect, and it will also be more difficult to secure the place you want.
It’s best to anticipate and book your accommodation with 2-3 months in advance, not only you will be able to secure a good spot, you will also find that prices are much more accessible. It can be very stressful trying to find something last minute and it will likely keep you from enjoying your holidays peacefully and relaxed. So here are a few steps to get you started:
Find the right location for your accommodation
Choose the right type of accommodation according to your needs
Find the best and most competitive prices
Zoomarine
19, Feb 2014
With its mild year-round climate, it's easy to see why the Algarve is the obvious choice for a fun-filled holiday for the whole family. But those fun days are not limited to sunbathing and swimming in the sea and the sports you can do on the Algarve coast. There are many other things to do with the children.
For families looking for the more natural side of the Algarve, there’s a huge variety of excursions to enjoy throughout the region, including a number of companies that offer boat trips to see the dolphins from Lagos, Portimão and Alvor. You can also choose to take a short boat trip to the islands around Faro and see the flora and fauna of the Ria Formosa Natural Park. Or go on a jeep safari or take a canoe out on the river, where there’s much to explore and lots of adventures to be had.
But you don’t need to go to sea to see dolphins in the Algarve. In Guia, near Albufeira, the Zoomarine is an oceanographic park with great educational entertainment, where there’s a unique opportunity to see dolphins, seals, sharks, turtles, exotic birds and waterfowl, alligators, tropical fish, as well as to have fun in several pools and water attractions, and also see some educational animal show.
